The borough’s name is derived from the township, which was named for Chestershire in England.

The First Congregational Church, at 30 Hillside Road, has been active since 1740. It is the oldest congregational denomination west of the Hudson River.

Alex Cable, American optical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur and founder of optical equipment manufacturer Thorlabs, was born in Chester Borough.
