Year Founded: Canfield Technologies was founded in 1844 in Newark. It has gone through several owners and locations, but is now privately held and based in Sayreville.

Products: Canfield has been manufacturing high quality solder and fluxes for industrial, plumbing, electronics, and stained glass used throughout the world. Solder comes in many forms. It makes washers, preforms, anodes, bar, BGA spheres, lead-free and tin/lead solid wire and core wire from hundreds of different alloys. The company can manufacture core wire as small as .006” diameter to any size above. All products are made in Sayreville. Fluxes and solder pastes for all industries are also manufactured at our facility. Quality control is critical to all company products. Canfield is ISO 9001:2015 certified and its lab tests all alloys to exceed national standards, so customers know they’re getting a quality product. 

The company takes pride in having two No. 1 brands in North America:

Canfield 60/40 stained glass solder, which is used by artists of all levels, professional studios, and stained-glass restoration projects around the world.

100% Watersafe lead-free solder for plumbing and potable water. This solder is stringently tested and certified by IAPMO, International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials.

Challenges: All raw materials used in products are commodities, so prices change daily. Quoting customers involves checking inventory cost, London Metals Exchange prices, and COMEX silver prices. Tin, which is used in 95% of Canfield products, has been as low as $8.00/lb. during the COVD-19 pandemic, to as high as $23/lb. after the pandemic due to supply and shipping constraints. Additionally, manufacturing in New Jersey is a challenge due to the higher cost of living, but company leadership says it is fortunate to have a great group of employees.

Growth: Demand has been picking up and Canfield is looking at purchasing a new extruder for its core solders, which is one of its growing products. Enhanced marketing and a digital presence have helped Canfield succeed in a niche industry.
