Saint Peter’s Family Health Center: Healthy Outcomes

Saint Peter’s University Hospital, whose mission is to reduce health inequities for the poor in New Brunswick and the greater Middlesex region, has made another move to help the community’s most at-risk re®sidents. Last March, the hospital completed a $12 million, 32,000-square-foot capital improvement project at Saint Peter’s Family Health Center that has doubled the number of adult and pediatric clinical exam rooms, added an on-site laboratory, and expanded the physical therapy area.

Because of these upgrades, visits to Saint Peter’s increased from 63,000 to 72,000 in 2024, with the capacity to grow to 100,000 annually within the next four years. This promises to further decrease healthcare disparities for low-income citizens.

The project, funded in part by a $5 million New Jersey state budget appropriation, also includes the new Market at Saint Peter’s, which is increasing access to fresh, local produce, non-perishable goods, baby care items, and personal hygiene products at no cost to the Health Center’s patients.

Led by McGuire Group Architects and builder Epic Management, the project employed 91 workers during construction, and the hospital has since added 118 full-time staff members. Saint Peter’s Family Health Center has also impacted the community by providing more than 2,100 meals to patients, conducting financial wellness education, and hosting Back to School/Back to Work events to provide patients with new backpacks, school supplies, and career resources.
