Report Finds Workers Average Only 2-3 Hours of ‘Focus Time’ Per Day

The average worker gets between two and three hours of focus time per day, meaning uninterrupted work periods without meetings, messages or tool switching, according to the Hubstaff 2026 Global Benchmarks Report.

Hubstaff, a leading tracking platform, analyzed tracked work time from over 140,000 workers across 17,000 organizations, and found that more meetings and poor scheduling are getting in the way of focus time. The average worker sits in twice as many meetings compared to two years ago, and the typical organization runs six times as many meetings.

“Our data proves that teams aren’t failing at productivity; they’re working in systems that constantly disrupt focus,” said Jared Brown, CEO of Hubstaff.

“When a worker’s day is fragmented by meetings, messages and tool switching, real focus is out of reach,” Brown said. “If leaders want better performance and real returns on their AI investments, they need to treat focus time as a core operating principle, not simply a personal responsibility.”

The report said 25% of meetings are scheduled during “deep peak work hours” (early to mid-morning), which is a time when employees are best suited for high-intensity undistracted work.

Aside from the interruptions from meetings and notifications, workers are also struggling to navigate numerous tools that draw their attention. The data shows workers are using an average of 18 apps per day. Workers in sales/marketing, customer success and administration and HR roles are averaging more than 20 apps per day.

Hybrid teams reported the least amount of focus time, with just 31% of hours in deep focus, compared to 39% of all workers. Fully committed work styles reported the most focus time with 41% of hours for remote teams and 45% for in-office teams.

However, hybrid teams are much more likely to be utilizing AI. Hybrid teams spend 11% of their day using AI apps, while fully remote and office-based teams spend only 1% to 2% of their day using AI apps, the report said.
