Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill is nominating Aaron Binder to lead New Jersey’s Department of the Treasury, a position in which he will oversee the state’s budget, taxation, pensions, and investments, and manage a department of more than 3,000 employees.
Binder has been Gov. Phil Murphy’s Deputy State Treasurer since December 2021 after serving as deputy executive director of the Assembly Majority Office during a 16-year stint with the Assembly. He also has previous experience serving as Budget Director for the Assembly Budget Committee.
“Together, we will ensure that New Jerseyans’ tax dollars are being spent wisely, continue to fully fund our pension system, and work to invest in the programs that help families make ends meet,” said Sherrill. “I look forward to working with Aaron to make smart financial decisions that lower costs and support our state’s economy.”

Serving as Deputy Treasurer, Binder assists in managing the state budget and oversees Treasury’s Office of Management and Budget, Office of Revenue and Economic Analysis, the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services and the Division of Taxation.
Previously, Binder served in the New Jersey Assembly Majority Office (AMO) where he served as part of the leadership team, including six years as the Deputy Executive Director. During his 16-year tenure with the AMO, he served as the aide to the Assembly Budget Committee, playing a key role in the state budget negotiations, and led multiple key policy issues, including public employee pension & benefits, banking and insurance, transportation, and health care. Prior to joining the AMO he served in a number of financial roles for Congreso De Latinos Unidos, Amtrak, and the City of Philadelphia.
