Optum to Lay Off 572 Employees and Shut Down Numerous Medical Offices in NJ

UnitedHealth Group subsidiary Optum will shut down multiple medical offices around New Jersey at the end of the month after the company filed WARN notices with the state announcing it will be laying off 572 employees.

According to the filing, the cuts will take effect between February and March 2026.

The Minnesota-based company began sending letters to patients on Monday informing them that affected medical practices will close on Nov. 30.

Discontinued specialty services in the state by Optum include: Gastroenterology, Podiatry, Chiropractic, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Orthopedics, and Pulmonology.

Numerous pediatric and family medicine offices around New Jersey are also being closed, while Optum is completely shutting down all behavioral health services in the state.

Specifically, Optum Care will lay off 390 employees statewide, with most paid through Feb. 2. Separately, Optum Medical Care will lay off 122 employees just in Secaucus by February and March, while Optum Select Services and Optum Management are laying off 60 workers total.

Optum is among the largest physician employers in the country, and oversees more than 90,000 affiliated doctors and more than 2,700 sites of care nationwide. Within New Jersey, it has more than 360 clinics and 2,100 providers.

According to an Optum Health spokesperson, the company will, “[support] affected team members with job placement resources and will redeploy talent to suitable open roles within the company,” adding that they are providing clear information and support to patients to ensure uninterrupted care.
