Jefferson Health Announces Layoffs, Including 108 in Cherry Hill

Jefferson Health, one of Philadelphia’s largest health networks, is laying off 1% of its total workforce, affecting between 600-700 of its 65,000 total employees. This includes at least 108 employees at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital in Cherry Hill, according to a WARN notice filed in New Jersey. The Cherry Hill layoffs are expected to take place by Jan. 13, 2026. Jefferson Health has cited major financial issues as the reason for the layoffs.

Jefferson released a statement, saying, in part, “To sustain our mission and continue serving our communities, we must take thoughtful, strategic actions – to align our operations for the future.”

Jefferson Health runs 32 hospitals and more than 700 outpatient locations across eastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey including in Camden and Gloucester counties, as well as locations in Bucks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania.

Jefferson Hospital was established in 1825 as Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Jefferson Health includes Thomas Jefferson University, which includes a medical school, nursing education programs and other health professions programs.

The non-profit hospital system has been rapidly expanding since 2015 when it acquired Abington Health. Jefferson merged with Aria Health in 2016, acquired the Kennedy Health system in New Jersey in 2017 and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in 2018. Additionally, Jefferson acquired Einstein Health Network in 2021 and most recently merged with Lehigh Valley Health Network in 2024.

The layoff announcement comes a few months after Jefferson Health posted a nearly $200 million operating loss for its latest fiscal year.
