Elizabeth Celebrates 10 Years of Tourism Growth

Last week, the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce (GECC) and the Elizabeth Destination Marketing Organization (EDMO), in partnership with Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, gathered with city officials and regional leaders at The Mills at Jersey Gardens to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Elizabeth Tourism with a vibrant celebration highlighting the city’s cultural, economic, and global milestones.

The City of Elizabeth celebrated a thriving tourism industry, marking a decade of growth, community engagement, and cultural discovery. The city’s tourism efforts have welcomed millions of visitors, supported local businesses, and highlighted the city’s rich history and vibrant diversity.

In 2024, Elizabeth welcomed a surge in tourism, with visitors spending a record-breaking $748 million — a 1.8% increase over the previous year. This spending, driven in part by higher prices across goods and services, resulted in a total economic impact of $1.1 billion.

Visitor activity supported 8,743 jobs, generated $381 million in labor income, and contributed $119 million in state and local tax revenues. Notably, food and beverage accounted for the largest share of spending at $225 million. Overall, tourism played a crucial role in the city’s economy, supporting one in nine jobs and offsetting $2,600 in taxes per household.

“This 10-year milestone is just the beginning for an even better upcoming decade.” said Jennifer Costa, executive director of the Elizabeth Destination Marketing Organization. “With global events on the horizon, we’re ready to welcome the world and show them everything Elizabeth has to offer.”

In a vibrant celebration set against the backdrop of New Jersey’s premier outlet shopping destination, Elizabeth marked a decade of tourism excellence with an elegant indoor cocktail reception that brought together elected officials, civic leaders, cultural partners, and distinguished guests. The evening featured inspiring remarks from Mayor J. Christian Bollwage and Alex Lasry, CEO of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ NYNJ Host Committee, underscoring Elizabeth’s emergence as a dynamic destination with growing international significance.

Business leaders, tourism advocates, and residents reflected on a decade of tourism-driven economic development, including increased international visibility, expanded hotel infrastructure, and elevated visitor engagement. Over the past ten years, Elizabeth has transformed into a dynamic travel destination, attracting visitors from around the world while creating new opportunities for local businesses and communities.

With remarks from city officials, cultural performances, and a spotlight on the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026™—in which Elizabeth plays a key regional supporting role—the event underscored the city’s strategic importance in the future of sports and global tourism.
