Pro-Iranian Hackers Attack Stryker Systems

Stryker, the parent company of Mahwah-based Stryker Orthopeadics, continues to resolve the disruption impacting its global network that resulted from a cyberattack by pro-Iranian hackers that was first reported yesterday.

The company issued a statement today saying that at present time (12:32 a.m. EST) there is no indication of malware or ransomware and that the situation is contained to Stryker’s internal Microsoft environment only.

Stryker is a global medical technology leader that develops innovative products and services in medical-surgery, neurotechnology and orthopeadics. Its products impact more than 150 million patients annually.

The Stryker statement also said the company has visibility to its orders entered before the event, and products will be shipped as soon as its system communications are restored. Any orders that have come in after the event are being examined. “We are working to ensure our electronic ordering system is back up and running as quickly as possible,” according to the statement.

According to CNN, the hackers claiming responsibility for the attack posted on social media that their efforts were in retaliation for a missile strike on an elementary school in Iran that killed 168 people, mostly children. Meanwhile FOX Business News reported that the hackers claimed 200,000 Stryker systems were affected and 50 terabytes of data were extracted.

FOX 17 News in West Michigan reported that Stryker’s global headquarters in Portage closed on Wednesday as the company was dealing with the issue. According to Portage Public Safety, the attack is wiping phones and computers tied to the company’s systems.
