Some $200 million in Gateway Tunnel Project funding is expected to be released this afternoon after the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City yesterday let stand last week’s temporary restraining order, issued by U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas, against the Trump administration’s move to suspend $16 billion in Gateway funding.
The appeals court said it will not hear the White House’s appeal, which it filed on Feb. 8, until later this month. As a result, the federal government must release more than $200 million in Gateway construction funds.
At a press conference today at the Frank R. Lautenberg Rail Station at Secaucus Junction, Gov. Mikie Sherrill commented, “We’re here today … because we won, and we’re going to keep on winning because [what the Trump administration did] was illegal.”
Sherrill said that the 1 p.m. deadline for the release of funds was set by the Trump administration. At press time, it is unknown if the $200 million has been delivered. When asked what would happen if the money is still not available, the governor said she would be back in court fighting for it.
The governor explained that $200 million is the next tranche of continued funding for the $16 billion project. “This would keep the job going. Then, we anticipate the money would continue to flow as we move through the project. There should be no more stoppage after this. But again, we’ve already seen some illegal actions by the president. … So, we’ll have to keep a good eye on it,” Sherrill said.
